Today is an exciting day in the world of Tuberville. Today we launch “You Say Potato…,” the pilot episode of the Tuberville Web Series. This web series has been in the works for about two years now. It began, believe it or not, as an idea for a single documentary, a short non-fiction video that would educate viewers about the Tuberville mission; to reduce hunger within our communities. After many, many emails, phone calls, and SKYPE meetings, the fictional web series was born.
Tuberville founder and director, Ralph Perkins had the foresight to allow us some creative flexibility. Ralph’s vision for Tuberville is to get people talking about hunger. He was wide open to exploring a different approach to help him get the word out, help share the Tuberville model of sharecropping potatoes to give to food banks, and maybe someday making Tuberville a household name.
What was exciting for us, the production team, was to have found a project that we could get behind, not just because we believed in the cause and the Tuberville solution but that challenged and engaged us creatively. It wasn’t just an opportunity to flex our storytelling muscle, it was a chance to try something innovative, to develop a model that combines creative storytelling with advocacy. We wanted to step in a new direction, away from the traditional promotional documentaries that most non-profits utilize. We had a developed a different philosophy about advocacy and promotion and we believed that Tuberville was the perfect project to put that into practice. We hope that through the fictional, magical world of Tuberville, we’ll accomplish the same thing that those documentaries accomplish and so much more. We believe in the power of a good story. We believe in the power of the potato.
